The Surgeon

The plastic surgeon in Colombia is a professional physician specialized in plastic surgery, who has obtained his/her medical degree from a university approved by the ICFES (Instituto Colombiano para el Fomento de la Educación). To practice medicine and surgery, the graduated medical doctor must register his/her medical degree with the ICFES and the Ministerio de Protección Social as a Colombian legal requirement. In order to become a member of any medical association, physicians are asked to validate their medical degree and ethical principles. Patients can rest assured that their surgeon is a certified plastic surgeon, and he/she is an experienced and properly trained physician, member of the most important medical organizations.

The plastic surgeon must fulfill continuing medical education and training, including innovations in surgery, surgical approach, surgical materials and instruments based on his/her experienced. During last years, the Colombian plastic surgeons have acquired a prestige of international character. This prestige is associated with their professionalism, expertise, and human quality.

Most Colombian plastic surgeons are members of the Sociedad Colombiana de Cirugía Plástica, Estética y Reconstructiva, and SCCP. This organization comprises plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgeons, with the essential purpose of providing assurance about their knowledge, experience and skill in that specialty. Surgeons who meet the requirements of expertise and training in aesthetics and reconstructive plastic surgery are granted by the SCCP, as a scientific organization. The SCCP continually develops activities of education and updating designed to promote the highest standards of personal conduct, patient safety and responsibility among their members.
