General Recommendations for surgery
As any other medical treatment, plastic surgery involves some risks you should know and understand. Surgery is not an exact science. Even under the best and latest cosmetic techniques and equipments, there are always risks associated with plastic surgery since there is no possible way to know how body may respond to the medical procedure. Any decision to undergo plastic surgery must evaluate benefits and potential risks. And since nobody wants complications during surgery, the professional medical staff always takes every precaution to avoid any risks.
Thanks to the preoperative patient preparation and the preanesthesia evaluation as part of the surgical protocol, incidence of intraoperative surgical complications occurring is low. However, every plastic surgeon has a duty to discuss the risks with you in detail. Every plastic surgery involves a certain amount of risk. It is important that you understand the risks involved in your particular procedure.
Risks may vary according to the treatment, degree of difficulty, and patient´s conditions. But remember that a skilled surgeon will take meticulous measurements before surgery to avoid all possible complications. Risks and potential complications include:
Cardiovascular risks :
The surgeon may decide to have a preoperative evaluation of a surgical patient, which may include assessment of cardiovascular risk factors. Anyway, every patient is appropriately monitored during and after surgery, and throughout the recovery. The patient will be discharged only when the medical team considers he/she is ready to return home.
Pulmonary risks:
Pulmonary conditions are assessed preoperatively. Smokers are asked to stop smoking two weeks before surgery. All patients receive precise instructions to stop smoking early in advance of surgery. However, if there are any underlying physical conditions that may place a patient at risk or if the patient has not stopped smoking, the surgeon may cancel a patient´s scheduled surgery.
Bleeding:
Bleeding is a potential complication in every surgical procedure. However, identification of patients at risk for excessive blood loss (blood analysis) may help avoid perioperative potential complications.
Thrombosis:
The deep vein thrombosis (DVT) commonly affects the leg veins causing a serious complication. A blood clot may dislodge and travel to the lungs producing a pulmonary embolism (PE). This medical emergency may be controlled by using an anticoagulation treatment with heparin or warfarin to thin the blood. If thromboembolism is suspected, postoperative early deambulation is the most indicated. Dr. Nieto routinely follows a complete perioperative preventing treatment to avoid all possible complications. For further information see Antiembolic prophylaxis.
Infections:
Despite taking all precautions, infections inside or outside incisions may occur. According to every patient, the surgeon may indicate an antibiotic prophylaxis. Usually, patients undergoing surgery receive antibiotic prophylaxis against wound infection.
